The influence of emergent technologies on decision-making processes in virtual teams

چکیده
Despite the popularity of virtual teams (VTs), little is known about the decision-making process of VTs collaborating over emergent technologies, such as 3D virtual environments (VEs) with avatars and web-conferencing tools (WCTs) that include audio, text and video. This study explores how these technologies influence the decision-making process of 21 VTs, solving a group task. The group sessions were analyzed qualitatively through open coding of all sequential actions taking place during the 20 minute long sessions. The results indicated that the two technologies supported different stages of VT decision-making process, which is in line with media synchronicity theory (Dennis, Fuller & Valacich 2008). The VE turned out to have shortcomings that were, in MST terms, related to high parallelism, which hindered a successful convergence phase and resulted in impeded decision quality. These results shed new light on the importance of communication process fit of emergent technologies with multiple communication channels.

Recent constructions view leadership as a process of social influence which coordinates processes of change. Moreover, such processes are not necessarily linked to role hierarchy but may be emergent and distributed within teams. However, the micro-processes through which this occurs are not well understood. The significance of the paper lies in its contribution to an understanding of the emerge...
متن کاملReal Decisions in Virtual Worlds: Team Collaboration and Decision Making in 3D Virtual Worlds
This study investigates how 3D virtual worlds (3DVWs) support team collaboration. Based on Media Synchronicity Theory, we pose that the shared environment and avatar-based interaction allowed by 3DVWs aid convergence processes in teams working on a decision making task, leading to increased shared understanding between team members. This increases performance of decision making teams. An experi...

A firm’s development of innovation in products and services are critical for sustaining a competitive advantage but new product development failure rate in various industries still remains relatively high. New processes emerge during product development due to the uncertainty of the requirements and the diversity of the product development team. Unstructured processes emerge through the social ...
متن کاملDecision-Making Processes and Team Performance in Self-Organizing Virtual Teams: The Case of Free/Libre Open Source Software Development Teams
Effective decision making is critical to team effectiveness. We examine decision making in the setting of self-organizing virtual teams, a setting that we expect to pose particular problems for effective decision making. A self-organizing team must develop effective practices in the absence of a formal organizational structure that guides the practices. A virtual team’s reliance on technologica...
